Heart in Cali <3

Hey friends,

Today is my first day back in Cleveland after my trip to California. Leaving Dave to come back home was not easy. As we drove to the airport we held hands the whole way there but kept pretty quiet. For me, I was holding back tears (I can’t speak for Dave but I think he would say the same. ) I did not want the car ride to end because I knew it would mean that it was time for goodbyes. When that time did come..the ugly tears came out. By ugly tears I mean the kind where your face contorts into weird forms to try to stifle complete sobs. It’s the kind where mascara runs down your face and snot drips out of your nose. Ugly. I’m sure witnesses in the airport gave us odd looks but it was so hard not to let it all out. The next few months will surely be a transitional period in our relationship as we start a temporary long distance relationship. They say, absence makes the heart grow fonder..and as corny as it sounds I know it is true. I may be home in Ohio, but my heart is in Cali 🙂

Phew okay. Enough of the sad sappy stuff. On to today’s adventures:


After arriving in Cleveland late last night, I didn’t get to bed until 2! Needless to say, I decided to sleep in today. After waking up, I enjoyed a bowl of oats w/ apples & cinnamons before doing a light workout. Today was a running rest day, so I chose to complete a quick yet effective workout on YouTube from my favorite trainers at Tone It Up. I did the Beach Babe workout from last year. I forgot how killer this quick workout is! By the end I was huffing and puffing! Tomorrow, 1/2 marathon training will continue with a 3 mile run.


For lunch, I was crazing the Thai Chicken Salad I had in Glendale with Dave at the Granville Cafe. Although I didn’t have chicken on hand, I tried to recreate the salad using mixed greens, mangos, cilantro, dried lo-mein noodles, and Trader Joe’s Island Soyaki dressing. The salad looked like this:

Unfortunately, I put a bit too much dressing on, however I loved the way the cilantro complimented the mango. Note to self: cilantro is a great way to spice up your salad!


After doing boat loads of laundry and organizing for my upcoming move (yes, I’ve been moving in installments..) I decided it was time for a snack. Since I had leftover chickpeas from my salad, I wanted to attempt to make Roasted Chickpeas with Indian spices. I thought they tasted great, however my family had some constructive criticism. They thought I should have baked them for longer to make them crunchier & they needed a bit more salt and spice. I agree that they need to be crunchier, so once I perfect the recipe I promise I will post it! For now, here is a picture of the end product:

Once I get the recipe perfected, I look forward to bringing these munchies with me as a healthy snack full of protein for on the go.

Momma’s Surprise Present

Tonight my mom called my sister and I down to the living room. My first thought was “uhoh..what did we do?!” However, when we got downstairs I was pleasantly surprised at what she gave us: a binder full of healthy recipes from the Cleveland Clinic.

For the past few months, she has been looking up healthy recipes on the Cleveland Clinic website and printing out the ones she thought we would like. This gift really means a lot to me. It’s so great that my mom is supportive of my efforts to eat healthily. This binder of recipes along with my Tone It Up Nutrition Plan will definitely be my go-to for healthy meals in graduate school.

My momma’s gift may seem simple, but it really touched my heart and put a smile on my face!

California Trip Day 5 Recap!

So today is my last afternoon with Dave in California (insert sad face). I’ve had such a great trip and have enjoyed every second with Dave. Leaving today will be extremely hard because I won’t see Dave until Thanksgiving. Although leaving is tough, I know that we both have new chapters we need to start: Dave with his new job and me with graduate school. Thankfully Dave will be moving back to the Midwest in 6 months and we will only be a three hour car ride away. 

Enough of the sappy stuff. Let’s talk about yesterday shall we? Yesterday was my first Saturday long run for 1/2 marathon training. I completed four miles at a 10:00 min/mile pace. One thing I need to keep in mind with running in the morning is not to drink too much coffee prior for 2 reasons : 1. I feel dehydrated and 2. My heart feels like it is pumping out of my chest.

Afternoon Activities!

After working out, we got ready to hit the beach! We opted to go to Manhattan Beach, which took us about 40 minutes with traffic to get to. The temperature was about 75 degrees so it felt a bit chilly by the beach, but once we laid out our towels the sun felt great!

I loved the beach. If I lived in California, I would definitely choose beach side. The atmosphere was so relaxed and easy going (my kind of style!).

After the beach, we drove down the coast for some site seeing. With windows down and music blaring we enjoyed the gorgeous view of the coast.

After exploring all afternoon, we were ravenous. With the help of Siri, we found out that Veggie Grill was only 2 miles away from us. Since we loved it the first time, we couldn’t wait to get back and try new dishes! This time, I ordered the portobello burger with a side of steamed kale with a sesame dressing. YUM

Dave ordered the BBQ Chllin Wings and the Carne Asada sandwich. I’ve gotta say…their wings are so delicious! I’m salivating just thinking about them. Although we loved our meals, my favorite is still the All Hail Kale Salad. That salad will forever be in my mind 🙂

Well, I only have a few more hours left here in California, so I’m off to spend the last few moments with Davie. I hope you all had a great weekend!
